Italienische Wissenschaftler haben sich einer neue Methode einfallen lassen um den Verbrauch an bestimmten bewusstseinsverändernden Substanzen in der Bevölkerung zu messen. Das Ergebnis war eine Korrektur der bisherigen Staatlichen Schätzerte um den Faktor 2 nach oben.
Als Messmethode haben die Wissenschaftler eine Analyse der Abwässer und Gewässer mehrerer größerer Itaienischer Städte angewandt. Sie suchten nach einem eindeutig auf Kokain zurückzuführenden Abbauprodukt nahmens Benzoylecgonin.
Die Messergebnisse ergaben, dass pro Tag ca. 4kg Kokain in den größeren Städten Italiens verbraucht werden. Das entspricht einem Verbrauch von 40000 Dosiseinheiten pro Tag (bei 100mg pro Dosis). Öffizielle Schätzungen ergaben deutlich weniger als die Hälfte dieses Verbrauches.
